It is that time of year again - when the SPCA expects a high volume of kittens.

So far, the SPCA has received four litters, totalling 16 kittens, who are all being looked after by foster carers until they are old enough to be adopted.

SPCA Otago business development manager Kirsty Thomson said the SPCA dealt with 550 kittens last year.

''Sometimes they have their mothers with them and sometimes they don't. Over the spring and summer we have a high volume of kittens that are often strays ... they are either dumped or abandoned.''

While it would be a while before kittens are ready for adoption, donations of kitten food were needed, Mrs Thomson said.

''It is a lot of work to make sure each kitten is ready to be adopted. Our foster carers will look after them until they are old enough to be de-sexed.

"If kittens don't have their mother with them, our foster carers will hand-feed them several times a day. It is a lot of work,'' she said.

If you find a stray cat with kittens, call the SPCA immediately.
