Region shaken by quake

Otago has been rattled by an earthquake tonight.

The shake, measuring 4 on the Richter scale, occurred at 6.44pm, GeoNet reported.

It was centred 30km west of Dunedin, and just 6km deep, GeoNet reported.

The quake was felt in many parts of the region, including Alexandra, Lawrence, Middlemarch and Balclutha, and several ODT readers likened it to the rumble of a large truck passing by.

There were no immediate reports of damage.
