Sandra Keen is fulfilling the wishes of her late husband Colin on the greyhound track - and she's doing one heck of a job of it.

Mrs Keen (52) took up the lead - and the leads - with Shez Keen, Business Boss and Sandi Claws after Colin died in April 2013, leaving his wife with one last wish - to race the dogs he had bred from his bitch Willy Mina.

''It was devastating that I lost him, but also for the mere fact I never got to see him race these dogs that he was so proud of,'' Mrs Keen said.

''I've tried to carry on and I've had to learn along the way. I never did anything with the mother other than catch her [at race meetings] and feed her and walk her.''

Shez Keen and Sandi Claws are featuring in a race meeting at Forbury Park on Sunday - a rare stand-alone Sunday meeting for the Forbury Park club.

It has been a quick rise from novice to seasoned trainer for Mrs Keen, who had never owned a dog or regularly been around dogs until she met Colin about eight years ago.

''I knew Colin wanted to race them - they were race dogs before they were pets - but they were a bit petted as well, having the run of the house,'' she said.

Mrs Keen does not drive, so has to rely on friends to take the dogs to the track at Forbury Park and further afield to Invercargill.

Shortly into her second season as a trainer, she has collected 11 wins, far exceeding her expectations.

''I never really thought I would accomplish what I've done, but I'm very grateful to Colin for getting me into the greyhound fraternity and the club members are great,'' she said.

''They come forward with their ideas and helpful hints and, yes, I have had my ears listening to what's going on and who does what.''

Mrs Keen lives alone with the four greyhounds, who were all looking perky and ready to run yesterday.

''Happy hounds are productive hounds - if the dogs are happy, they'll do their utmost best,'' she said.

''They have the run of the house - I think they're happy.

''They're like my children. They're a team, even though one of them is doing better than the other two.''

That one is Sandi Claws, who has already reached the top grade for greyhounds, and has a good chance of winning her race at Forbury Park on Sunday.
