Evening raises $5000 for Tuwhare crib residency

The first fundraising steps have been taken on a path it is hoped will lead to a creative residence at Kaka Point.

The Koha for the Crib fundraising tribute to late poet Hone Tuwhare at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum raised more than $5000 for the proposed residency to be built at his former crib, Hone Tuwhare Charitable Trust chairman Dr Noel Waite said.

''It's all incremental and we just need to built on momentum, but we are in it for the long term,'' he said.

It was the first fundraising for the residence itself as past funds were used for feasibility and design work, he said.

''We have been doing all of the behind-the-scenes stuff to get up and running. I think we have got everything in place to make it happen now.''

He was pleased with the turnout of about 100 people at the event and said it was a ''good night''.

Rob Tuwhare, Hone's son, told the Otago Daily Times in March it was expected to cost about $1 million to restore the crib, connect sewerage and build a house on the site.

The house would accommodate the resident writer's family and include a visitors' centre, which would be open to the public and for school visits.

Dr Waite said the trust would be making further announcements about the project in November.

This year, the crib hosted its first residency, with the Dark Light Art Collective staying in the South Otago town for a week in July.

It was hoped another residency would take place next year but it was unknown what form it would take, Dr Waite said.
