Peter Neville gives a welcoming speech at the official unveiling of a plaque placed in honour of his wife, the late Denise Walsh, outside Logan Park High School's auditorium yesterday.

The auditorium has been named after the teacher, director and playwright, who was the school's former head of drama.

She died of cancer in March this year.

Ms Walsh worked in the school from 1974 when it opened, until 2013, just before she was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to youth drama.

She established drama as a separate subject in the school, and went on to take regional and national honours in one-act play festivals and Shakespearean drama.

She also represented the New Zealand Theatre Federation internationally and made 22 trips abroad with Logan Park High School pupils performing her plays.

The school's auditorium is one of only five in New Zealand named after a playwright.

The plaque unveiling included a series of Ms Walsh's colleagues, friends and former pupils talking about her achievements and anecdotal memories of her, and a performance of an extract from her last play, which won the South Island Theatre Federation one-act play competition in 2012.
