Nine days set aside for alcohol policy hearings

Nine days have been set aside for the Dunedin City Council to hear submissions on its proposed local alcohol policy (Lap).

The council's special projects officer, Kevin Mechen, confirmed it had received 4300 submissions on the policy.

About 400 submitters had indicated they wished to speak to their submissions.

A panel of seven councillors is set to hear from submitters over nine days: November 11-13 and 19, and December 2-4, 17 and 18.

The council's plan would see some bars closing an hour earlier at 3am, licences required for use of public footpath space outside bars until 11pm and a one-way door policy introduced from 1am.

Police support the proposed Lap, while the Dunedin bar industry has run a massive campaign against it, resulting in the bulk of the sub-missions.
