Actor and director Louise Petherbridge reads a Dylan Thomas work, A Child's Christmas in Wales, at the Globe Theatre in Dunedin on Sunday.

The event, held to raise funds for planned conservation and repair work at the Globe, also included a performance by Glenys Whittington of a new one-act play, Question and Answer, by Brian Bell.

Friends of the Globe chairwoman Rosemary Beresford said the gala fundraiser, dubbed ''An Afternoon with Louise Petherbridge and Friends'', was ''very successful''.

More than 40 people attended and about $1500 was raised for the theatre project.

About $450,000 of $550,000 sought for the work had been raised, she said.
