Health World Mosgiel has taken on the rental and sales of mobility equipment.

Owner Jan-Maree Anderson said the service provided mobility equipment, such as wheelchairs and crutches.

It began in the Gordon Rd shop about four months ago, after Mosgiel Abilities Resource Centre (Marc) stopped providing the service.

''If I didn't take it over, there would be no service in Mosgiel.''

The service was important for Mosgiel, because health centres and hospitals had stopped issuing mobility equipment, too, she said.

The service and prices for the equipment were the same as Marc had been charging and the service included free delivery and pick up of mobility equipment, she said.

The service needed to be added to an existing business.

It would struggle to survive as a stand-alone operation, as the revenue generated would not cover the cost of hiring a staff member, she said.

A spokeswoman for the Mosgiel Abilities Resource Centre said it stopped renting and selling mobility equipment when it closed its home support service.

It was continuing with its day programme for people with disabilities.
