Dunedin writer Tony Eyre won second prize in the Shanghai Library's international writing competition.
His essay, ''Friendship First, Competition Second - a Story of How Ping Pong Diplomacy Led to an Enduring Friendship over 40 Years'', detailed his wife and former New Zealand table tennis champion Yvonne Fogarty's trips to China in the 1970s.
Mr Eyre will collect his award in Shanghai on December 19.
