Dunedin has pedalled away with a national award at a ceremony recognising New Zealand's champions for walking and cycling.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull and city councillors won the award for cycle-friendly commitment by a public organisation.

The award was part of the Cycling Advocates Network Cycle Friendly Awards 2014, supported by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and was announced at the 2Walk and Cycle 2014 conference in Nelson last night.

Judges praised Dunedin for ''a refreshing example of community, city councillors, and NZTA staff coming together to prioritise road safety for all road users''.

''For far too long, parking has been valued over road safety. Dunedin is leading the way to resetting priorities.''
