Great response to Age Concern's call for volunteers

Mosgiel people have responded immediately to a call for help from Age Concern two weeks ago in the Taieri Times.

Age Concern's accredited visitor service co-ordinator Tristan Kavanagh said there was a growing waiting list of older people in the wider Mosgiel area who were socially isolated and in need of a visitor.

In the week after that story ran, eight people contacted them to say they were available to do visits.

Ms Kavanagh said the response had solved the immediate problem, and all their new volunteers had been offered training before they got started.

The service had the opposite problem in central Dunedin recently, with lots of volunteers and spare capacity to visit people.

That issue was highlighted in The Star newspaper two months ago and more people had signed up to receive visits on a regular basis.

She said it had been ''a bit crazy lately'' matching people up but they were always open to more volunteers and clients.

She said volunteers made a difference to people's lives and a lot of good friendships developed as a result.
