Competitors in the ''5 cans for 5km'' run and walk to raise food for the St Vincent de Paul foodbank for Christmas, head up Butts Rd at Logan Park, in Dunedin, last night.

Organised by St Vincent de Paul Society volunteer Philippa O'Neill, the event around the Logan Park area attracted 218 entrants.

More than 1200 cans were donated to the foodbank and local businesses sponsored the event with 75 spot prizes.

''It was unbelievable. We're blown away with the support. This was the first time but it certainly won't be the last,'' she said.

The Hill City-University Club provided its clubrooms and helped with the event.
