Dunedin librarians have given new life to old books, as part of a series of extraordinary art works.

Created in response to the recent Art & Book Symposium, the ''Second Reading'' exhibition involves 13 artist-librarians across the city's libraries. The works were created using books that had remained unsold after the Libraries' Book Sale, giving them a ''second life as art'', Dunedin Public Libraries events co-ordinator Kay Mercer said.

The works feature a wide range of styles - from collage to using the pages of books to create a full-scale ball gown.

The art works are displayed mostly at Dunedin City Library in Moray Pl, as part of an ''art trail'', where visitors collect a brochure listing the works and are invited to search the library to find them.

''We have placed the works all over the public areas of the library, and they are proving very popular with our customers,'' Mrs Mercer said.

The ''Second Reading'' art works will remain in the library's public areas until the end of the month. It is hoped to display some of the works as part of a permanent installation.
