Nearing Bermuda start line

While Stanley Paris is excited to have reached Bermuda and has completed the first leg of his global circumnavigation attempt unscathed, the timing of his arrival is expected to cause some problems.

The 77-year-old former Dunedin resident left St Augustine, Florida on his yacht Kiwi Spirit four days ago on his second attempt to become the oldest person to sail fastest around the world solo from Bermuda.

The record was set in 1986 by the late Dodge Morgan, who did it in 150 days, aged 54.

As Dr Paris neared Bermuda yesterday, he said he was only moving at 7 knots (13kmh), which meant he would not make the start line in Bermuda until 9pm or later (local time).

''I will no doubt heave to and drift the night away so as to approach the start line on Saturday morning (Saturday evening NZ time).

''It's going to be a long voyage.''
