Warning about tourist drivers

Police have called on Otago motorists to be vigilant after more poor driving by tourists.

Two tourist drivers - a Thai woman in her 40s and an Indian man in his 30s - were issued with infringement notices yesterday after erratic driving, including crossing the centre line, Senior Sergeant Dave Scott said.

Police received reports of the motorists' behaviour from members of the public. Neither driver pulled over when they were pursued by police.

''I would have thought it was known internationally to pull over when police with sirens are behind you, but apparently not,'' Snr Sgt Scott said.

Both were driving rental cars.

The incidents highlighted the need for motorists to be vigilant.

''It's not only your driving you need to be worried about; it's the driving of the vehicle coming towards you. Occasionally tourists get it wrong and cross the centre line,'' he said.

Police estimate overseas drivers are involved in 25% of crashes in central and lower South Island, compared with 2% nationwide.
