10 yr old driver stopped by police

A 10-year-old girl was behind the wheel of a Ford Falcon which police stopped on Saturday night.

The girl was driving in Forbury Rd about 9pm when the driver's erratic display caught the attention of policeman in a patrol car, Senior Sergeant Dave Scott said.

The owner of the car, an unrelated 52-year-old Dunedin man who was in the front passenger's seat, tried to justify allowing the girl to drive by saying he learnt to drive in similar circumstances.

Police issued the man with an infringement notice for aiding and abetting an unlicensed driver. The penalty for such an offence is a $400 fine.

More details are in tomorrow's Otago Daily Times.
