About 300 flares were let off to mark the 20th anniversary ofthe formation of the Dunedin Water Rescue Squad. Dunedin Search and Rescue co›ordinator Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said the support from the community was ‘‘fantastic''. Hundreds gathered in John Wilson Ocean Dr and on the beach to watch the demonstration. Snr Sgt Benn said he hoped it would raise awareness of how flares looked when lit so people could more readily identify them in future.
