AA Otago District cycling spokesman Hudson Biggs said members had raised concerns about Portobello Rd over the past months and the organisation was deeply worried about the safety of the road.
If there was enough interest, the AA would host a meeting to discuss ''a way forward from here''and invite representatives from the Dunedin City Council, New Zealand Transport Agency, cycle advocate group Spokes, business owners and affected parties around the Portobello Rd project to attend.
He said the AA had been consulted about both the development of the wider South Dunedin cycle network, one section of which prompted the changes to Portobello Rd, as well as the current plan to correct the roading layout, but it was clear the community was demanding wider consultation on any solution.
The council plans, within the month, to landscape the new layout and resurface and re-mark the present vehicle lanes in a bid to make the layout clearer for users.
However, a contract for the work has not yet been signed.
Mr Biggs said the AA Otago District Council had resolved recently to offer to host a public meeting, but was prompted to take action now after an Otago Daily Times story this week highlighted continuing confusion about the changes.
''What has to happen now is quickly agreeing how to fix Portobello Rd before anyone is hurt,'' Mr Biggs said.
