Those out to win the Mahinerangi Madness Mountain Bike Race/Ride will no doubt have their heads down and their legs pumping.

But those out for a fun ride at the event will see wind turbines, a water race and the Mahinerangi power station and enjoy other scenic views.

''It's beautiful up there,'' event co-ordinator Letty Walmsley said.

The event is one of the Friends of Taieri College parents group's annual fundraising activities.

Last year, the group held a motocross event at Berwick which raised more than $7500.

Unfortunately, the venue was not available to run the event again this year, so the organisers changed the event to a mountain bike race instead, which will be held at Thornicroft Farm on December 7.

The event aims to raise at least $2000 for the Friends of Taieri College, but if a similar amount to last year could be raised, the organisers would be delighted, she said.

''Basically the group raises the funds for a number of things, like paying for kids to go on school trips who can't afford to pay for it themselves.

''They run a hardship fund. They've helped fund a refurbishment of the school pool. They've bought a Mig welder for the Trades Academy.

''We've also bought lots of sports equipment this year.

''Everything that we do goes towards helping the kids.''

Ms Walmsley said the 10km long course would be mainly over grass and farm tracks, and was suitable for riders of intermediate level.

Riders are advised to bring bikes in good condition, with good brakes, spare tyres and tubes, and tools to change them.

She said the idea was to ride as many loops as possible over a three-hour period, and the individual or team that completes the most laps, wins.

The event provides something for everyone.

A miniature bike track will be provided for children, and spectators can walk to the wind turbines and Mahinerangi power station.
