A dusky dolphin and its calf play in Otago Harbour near Portsmouth Dr yesterday afternoon.

A small group of the dolphins, which have a light patch on their dorsal fin, were spotted near Harington Point and Wellers Rock on Sunday afternoon.

Department of Conservation marine ranger Jim Fyfe said it was not unusual for marine mammals to seek out the shelter of a harbour to give birth.

In recent years, the smaller bottlenose dolphins had given birth in the harbour, but it had been a few years since dusky dolphins were seen there, he said.

Pods of dusky dolphins, which live off the Kaikoura coast, travel south seeking cooler waters and more productive feeding grounds during summer.

They then migrate north in autumn.
