Miguel Molina Lagos, of Chile, celebrates gaining New Zealand citizenship after a ceremony at Dunedin's Municipal Chambers yesterday.

Mr Molina Lagos (40) moved to Dunedin six years ago and enjoys living here, despite missing his family, including his 17-year-old son, who still lives in Chile.

''It's a beautiful country. A very safe place. A good place to study.''

The musician, who plays traditional South American music, said it had been a long, difficult journey to get his residency, so the ceremony was very special.
