A silver Toyota Altezza rolled off Hawthorne Ave, near Lonsdale St, and travelled down a bank in Mornington yesterday.

Southern District Command Centre deployment co›ordinator Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said a member of the public saw the car leave the road and called police at 12.44pm yesterday.

A man was taken to Dunedin Police Station and recorded a breath-alcohol level of 690mcg and was charged with drinking and driving, Snr Sgt Benn said.

From December 1, drivers aged 20 years and older who recorded a breath-alcohol level between 251mcg and 400mcg of alcohol per litre of breath would receive a $200 infringement fee and 50 demerit points. Drivers who recorded a breath-alcohol level above 400mcg continued to face criminal prosecution. For drivers under the age of 20 years, the limit remained at zero.
