''This car has done more rallies than I have,'' Robert Herron said.

Mr Herron's 1915 Ford Model T is one of many that will take part in the Brighton Veteran Car Rally on January 24.

And the vehicle has certainly clocked up some miles over the years.

''In 1978, the car went from Sydney to Brisbane in a rally. It has taken part in many,'' Mr Herron said.

The Brighton Veteran Car Rally, which has been running annually for 61 years, will feature cars more than 97 years old.

Mr Herron bought the Model T in April 2012.

''I've always had an interest in them. The car was the first model to have electric lights. A lot of it is still quite original.

"The seats are still padded with horse hair. It's authentic. The car has spent a bit of time at the Queenstown Motor Museum. It was a Gore car,'' he said.

Next year will be Mr Herron's second time in the rally with the Model T.

Mr Herron also has a 1928 Ford Model A he bought in 1969.

''It took me three years to rebuild it. It isn't old enough to go in the rally,'' he said.

The rally will start at 11am when the first car is sent off from the Octagon by Mayor Dave Cull.

''It is the oldest Veteran Car Rally in the southern hemisphere. All cars in the rally are over 97 years old and most are well over 100 years old. Drivers and navigators will be dressed in costumes to match the era of their car,'' organiser Tony Devereux said.

Cars will turn at Rattray St and will travel up Serpentine Ave, Hawthorne Ave, Jubilee St, Stone St, Kaikorai Valley Rd, through Burnside and Green Island, past Waldronville and out to Brighton.

Veteran cars must have been built before 1919 to be eligible for entry.

• People are invited to have a look at the veteran vehicles while they are parked in the Octagon from 10am.

Cars will arrive at the Brighton Domain from 11.30am. Vehicle entries close on December 20.
