It's not just the meals that are happy at McDonald's restaurant in George St, Dunedin.

A major remodelling of the building has been undertaken, which closed the restaurant for six weeks.

The doors will reopen on Saturday to the new-look restaurant and franchise owners Justin and Eterei Stonelake are delighted with the result.

''This is something to be really proud of. It's a real step-change from what was before,'' Mr Stonelake said.

The renovations, which included seismic strengthening, cost $2 million. An additional $700,000 was spent on equipment.

The project took three months and was the first major renovation since the restaurant opened on December 13, 1988.

The restaurant was now housed on one level, with seating for 124, and the layout, which included the addition of a meeting room, had ''significantly changed'', Mr Stonelake said.

Another 25 staff had been hired, with more to come.

Motivational quotes adorn a wall, after Mrs Stonelake asked for favourites quotes through social media.

They were submitted by family, friends and work colleagues and range from Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln to Helen Keller.

The front of the building, which now features schist stone, was constructed about 1928; the rear extension was added in 1988.

In 2012, a $2 million redevelopment of the McDonald's Great King St restaurant in North Dunedin was completed.

The franchise is also owned by Mr and Mrs Stonelake.
