William James White (29) was yesterday sentenced in the Dunedin District Court to four months' home detention after previously admitting a charge of producing a class B controlled drug.
The Dunedin-based designer was using butane to extract cannabis oil from plant material on October 13 when an explosion blew out one wall of his Green Island shed.
White suffered burns to his hands, and later admitted he was extracting cannabis oil at the time.
Judge Stephen Coyle warned White not to ''squander this opportunity'' and to address his drug offending.
While a term of imprisonment was initially considered, this would be a certainty if he reappeared in court on drug-related charges, Judge Coyle said.
White had reoffended while serving a community sentence on a drug-related matter, and although he was trying to addressing his offending he was now at a ''crossroads'', Judge Coyle said.
His six-month conditions include not to possess drugs, and to attend addiction and mental health counselling.
