An allegedly intoxicated man trying to buy petrol from a Mosgiel service station found his night going from bad to worse.
''He appeared quite intoxicated at a petrol station,'' Acting Senior Sergeant Jared Kirk said.
''People at the petrol station had concerns about him ... and contacted us.''
A police officer subsequently pulled over the 24-year-old Brighton man in Gordon Rd about 6pm yesterday.
''He wasn't really complying with any of the officer's instructions and was subsequently [pepper-]sprayed,'' Acting Snr Sgt Kirk said.
The man was then breath-tested, and allegedly recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 947mcg - more than twice the legal limit.
He was also found to be disqualified from driving.
The man was arrested and charged with drink-driving, driving while disqualified, refusing to accompany an officer and resisting arrest.
He is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Monday.
