Sun possible for Christmas Day

Get out the sundresses and shorts for Christmas Day but keep the umbrella and cardi handy.

The MetService is still a little unsure about how good Otago's weather will be for the festive day as a high is due to shuffle east off New Zealand about the same time Santa arrives.

Forecaster Georgina Griffiths said as it was still six days until the big day, the timing of the high moving off the country was uncertain.

''If it moves faster you'll get cloud and some sprinkles of rain but if it's slower it'll be all good.''

At the moment, it seemed as if the fine weather predicted before Christmas would continue for Christmas Day but not Boxing Day, she said.

''If the northeasterlies continue for Dunedin, temperatures will probably sit at the 18degC or 19degC mark, but inland on Christmas Day, the forecast is for a hot one for southern and Central Otago. We're forecasting 27degC for Queenstown.''

Last-minute Otago shoppers would be able to take advantage of fine weather from Monday, she said.

After a damp weekend, a high was expected to move on to the country, and would be particularly strong over the South Island.

''In fact, Otago could well be the place next week.''
