Wishing tree attracts 2267 presents for needy

The young and old are giving generously to a Christmas appeal in Dunedin.

Kmart Dunedin Wishing Tree Appeal champion Dawn Barnes-Gardner said 2267 presents had been given to the appeal and would be distributed to children and families in need this Christmas.

She was ''hopeful'' the target of 4500 presents would be reached in Dunedin before Christmas Day.

The gifts included 100 wooden toys hand-made by a Portobello man and a bike from a ''hard case'' Dunedin boy, aged 9 or 10, who was sure Santa would bring him a new bike this Christmas.

Some pupils from Tahuna Normal Intermediate School had given presents to the appeal rather than taking part in Secret Santa this year.

Gifts for children and adults would be accepted, wrapped or unwrapped, in the main Kmart entrance in Meridian mall, until the store closed on Christmas Eve.

The gifts would be distributed by the Salvation Army, she said.
