Christmas joy

'Tis the season to be jolly ... and those who aren't feeling the Christmas spirit should probably head to No 4 Roy Cres, Dunedin.

It is there Mason Patterson (1) sits and smiles among the lights and decorations at his grandmother's home.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and for the past two weeks, there have been few silent nights in Concord - mainly because hundreds of cars have been going up and down the street, and visitors have been wandering in and out of the Pattersons' house.

The Pattersons have well and truly decked their halls, lounge, kitchen, bedrooms and even the toilet and bathroom with bells and holly and other Christmas decorations, and have opened their house to the public, all in a bid to spread a bit of joy to the world.

Carol Patterson said thousands of lights and countless Christmas trees, Santas, reindeer and other Christmas decorations were on display.

It's really enough to make the most hardened Christmas grinches hark.

To top it all off, visitors get to take home a chocolate Santa or a piece of Christmas cake.

Mrs Patterson has been collecting decorations for about 14 years, and has decorated her house for 12.

At first it was purely for family and friends. But before she knew it, ''friends of family'' and her work colleagues also started to visit.

Thousands of people visited the house this year.

Many of the faithful come every year.

Mrs Patterson collects donations and hopes to give about $1200 to the Otago Hospice this year.

Tonight, Christmas Eve, will be the last night the home will be open to the public this year.
