Newborn Lucy Hobson seemed determined to bide her time for a bit to arrive on Christmas morning.

Her proud mother, Zoe Hobson, of Dunedin, said some friends and family were betting the new baby was waiting until Christmas to appear.

A little sister for Abigail (4), Lucy was due on December 21, and was born yesterday at 11.30am, at Queen Mary Hospital.

Mrs Hobson joked that it at least meant husband Daniel would not forget the date of their daughter's birthday.

Staff reported a settled day at Dunedin Hospital yesterday.

About 170 patients at the hospital received $10 each as the traditional Richmond Shilling allocation.

Yesterday marked 80 years of the Richmond Shilling, which is distributed from the bequest of James Richmond, proprietor of Richmond's Scotia Hotel.
