The hammers are out again this summer at the University of Otago, with several building projects being worked on while the students are away.

The work includes earthquake strengthening at Carrington College, which is the latest in a string of residential colleges to be strengthened.

Property services director Barry MacKay said $465,000 had been allocated to the project, which would bring the college up to 60% of the new building standard.

Accommodation services director James Lindsay said the work on a 12-bed house and another 13-bed house was scheduled to be completed by the end of next year.

Work was also continuing on other projects, including on the new Centre for Sustainability, which involves retaining and updating villas in Castle St.

The university also hoped to complete stage one, which includes earthquake strengthening, of the redevelopment of its St David 2 building over summer.

The total project - both stages - is budgeted to cost more than $9 million.
