Museum advance 'vital'

Despite positive progress, there is no room for complacency about the future of the Dunedin Gasworks Museum, with about $2 million required to safeguard key buildings.

Dunedin heritage campaigner Ann Barsby, one of the founders of the Southern Heritage Trust, made that comment yesterday. After an earlier period of frustrating delays, the museum project had built up momentum in recent years, she said.

A key turning point had been the successful restoration of the museum's fitting shop, officially reopened in 2012, which an engineering report had earlier warned had been ''likely to collapse''.

Mrs Barsby, who founded the Southern Heritage Trust and is a member of the museum's trust board, said much had been achieved but much was still to be done.

It was ''vital'' to press ahead with many more things needed to safeguard the museum's future, including raising community awareness, and further developing the museum operation and services.
