One-year-old Abigail splashes with dad Michael Kruger, of Dunedin, in the learner's pool at Moana Pool yesterday.

She is one of 160 children aged under 3 enrolled for baby water classes at the pool in the first school term this year.

Mr Kruger said he started taking Abigail to the pool when she was 6 months because he wanted his children to be confident around water from a young age.

His second daughter, Isobel (4 months), had already been in the pool and was enrolled in a Swimsation aqua tots course at the Dunedin pool later this year.

Swimsation administrative assistant Megan Ferguson said the courses were popular, but spaces were still available on the three courses offered for under-3s.

Plunket national child safety adviser Sue Campbell, of Dunedin, said such courses gave children confidence in the water before starting proper swimming lessons.

Plunket had teamed with Huggies this summer to offer a free pair of swimming nappies for every child under 18 months enrolled in a lesson at Moana Pool in term 1 this year, she said.
