Neighbour's suspicion helps nab teenagers

An eagle-eyed resident helped police in the arrest of a trio of teenagers who police say are linked to the burglaries of more than a dozen Mosgiel properties since the new year.

Earlier this week, a member of the public called police after being ''concerned about three young fellows in the Kinmont area'', Sergeant Kevin Davidson, of Mosgiel, said.

''He was a wee bit suspicious, and did the right thing ... called police promptly.''

Officers spoke to the boys, including two 14-year-olds, and believed they were linked to 14 burglaries at 11 Mosgiel addresses.

''Inquiries are still ongoing and there could be more yet.''

They were expected to appear in Youth Court.

Sgt Davidson said the two 14-year-olds, both local boys, were joined in the last few burglaries by a third teenager, who was holidaying in the area from Palmerston North.

He had been referred to Youth Aid.

''These kids have been going through open windows. One would scoot in to open a door, while another would keep a lookout,'' Sgt Davidson said.

''They would clean out any cash lying about, and they took alcohol from a few addresses, and other bits and pieces.''

The stolen money was less than $100 and ''spent at local shops''. Any alcohol was shared among their friends.

The trio operated only during the day.

Only a couple of the burglaries had been reported to police, ''with a lot of people unaware their place had been entered'', Sgt Davidson said.

''But since we have contacted them, the homeowners have been very concerned.''

As the properties were all entered through open windows, Sgt Davidson urged residents to secure their homes.
