Ticket sales for huge water slide slow

A 300m long monster is coming to Dunedin.

The water slide - dubbed Goliath - will be set up on the Oval on Sunday, February 8.

It was originally planned to set up the slide in the Octagon, but after consultation with council a decision was made to transfer it to the Oval, Monster Slide chief executive Jamie Templeton, of Wellington, said.

''It will be a bit more practical going down there.''

Dunedin lagged behind in ticket sales.

Other centres hosting the slide had sold between 1000 and 2000, he said.

He hoped to sell about 2000 tickets for the Oval event and the company was considering adding other student-oriented events.

Ticket prices start from $15 for three slides.

A 9m-high ''monstrosity'' ramp, gives sliders the necessary elevation, while a water pump system helps people slide down at between 20kmh and 40kmh.

Any water shortage concerns were alleviated by recycling the 80 cubic metres, ''probably less than half a back yard swimming pool''.

Mr Templeton said the idea was first developed in America, but had been ''redesigned, re-engineered and redeveloped'' for New Zealand.

''Based on our testing, we are pretty confident we have the best monster slide in he world.''

Participants and spectators were encouraged to bring water bombs, water guns, and dress to impress, Mr Templeton said.

A Dunedin City Council spokesman confirmed the application was being considered.
