Teens linked to 22 burglaries

Police say three teenagers are now linked to burglaries at 22 homes across Mosgiel.

The teenagers were spoken to by police last week.

A 14-year-old was arrested and is due to appear in the Youth Court today, while two 13-year-olds were referred to Youth Aid because of their age.

They were initially thought to be responsible for 14 burglaries at 11 Mosgiel addresses.

However, Sergeant Kevin Davidson said they were now allegedly responsible for 26 offences at 22 homes.

The houses were scattered across Mosgiel and some had been targeted more than once.

Most had been entered through open windows, he said.

One home was entered after a spare key was discovered under a door mat, and another was entered through an unlocked back door.

Only a ''minimal'' amount of cash had been taken, totalling ''hundreds of dollars'' across all the properties entered, he said.

However, police wanted to reinforce the need to keep homes secure ''to avoid this sort of thing'', Sgt Davidson said.

One woman had been unaware her home had been targeted until contacted by police.

''Her comment was, 'I feel sick'. It was the fact that, basically, their homes had been violated, I suppose.''

The parents of all three teenagers had also been spoken to, and were ''pretty much devastated'', Sgt Davidson said.
