Timmy the runaway puppy was found yesterday by delighted Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei.

The puppy escaped from the Paws Inn kennel on January 17, and grave fears were held for his safety.

Ms Turei contacted the Otago Daily Times to say she found him while walking with nephew Mihai Whitaker and the family's other dogs, Tom and Axle, about 11am.

He was near the railway tracks at Waitati, only a couple of streets from home.

She believed he had walked about 7km from the Paws Inn kennel, in Blueskin Rd, and would have made it home that day if he had not been spotted.

''It was just opportune that we happened to all be there at the same time.

''I think he stayed away from people and noise, and that's why we didn't hear any sightings of him at all, and he just tried to figure out how to make his way home.''

Tired and skinny, he had been sleeping and eating a lot since his safe return.

Ms Turei planned to take him to the vet for a check-up.
