Passing motorists' fire efforts praised

A Taieri couple want to thank the motorists who stopped and helped put out a roadside fire which could have caused a ''conflagration'' on their property if it had got out of control.

Jack Phillips said it was ''marvellous'' people were community-minded enough to stop when they saw a fire had started on the grass verge outside his Law Rd property, opposite the Gladfield golf course.

As his home was quite a bit off the road, he and wife Annette were not aware anything was wrong until the power went out.

It turned out the copper power lines had sagged in the heat and snapped, sparking a fire in the grass in front of his fence.

''By the time I got down the road, I could see smoke and flames on the edge of the road.''

However, passing motorists had called the Fire Service and were putting out the fire with their own portable fire extinguishers, he said.

''We've got quite a few trees and gum trees in that paddock so it could have been quite a conflagration if it had all gone up.''

The Fire Service and Delta arrived quickly and within the hour everything was fixed, he said.

He did not know who the good Samaritans were but wanted to let them know their efforts were appreciated.

''I'm very grateful.''
