Dunedin residents are being asked to send their favourite cat and dog images to the Toitu Otago Settlers Museum for inclusion in a new exhibition.

More than 100 people had emailed in their favourite images since the museum began seeking them late last month, exhibition developer William McKee said.

''It's really struck a chord with people,''he said.

The exhibition, titled ''Cats and Dogs - An Illustrated History'', will explore the social history of cats and dogs in Dunedin, mainly using photographs from the museum's archives.

''They've always been a part of Dunedin life, since European settlement.''

The museum was asking people to send in digital images of their pets, via the internet, to www.toituosm.com/catsndogs until August 1.

Photos selected from those submitted would be incorporated into the display.

The exhibition will feature the evolving role of cats and dogs, and also examine their environmental impacts.

Environmentalists, including outspoken philanthropist Gareth Morgan, will also give their views on future cat and dog control.

Staff hoped the exhibition would attract people who did not usually visit the museum.
