Dunedin's Anglican community celebrated the 150th anniversary of the city's oldest church still in use by retracing the steps of its founders.

The anniversary at All Saints' Anglican Church started yesterday morning at Museum Reserve _ the same spot where the service to mark the laying of the foundation stone started in February 1865.

Those who gathered to mark the anniversary were led by All Saints' clergy and two bishops in a procession, complete with banners, two incense burners and a processional cross, to the Cumberland St church, following in the footsteps of the church's founders.

Anglican Parish of Dunedin North vicar Rev Michael Wallace spoke on the museum reserve, thanking God for the beautiful weather.

He outlined how the service used many of the same elements as the service 150 years before, including the choir singing from Psalm 122.

The service was just the start of the church's celebration of its 150th anniversary. Commemorations would also include an exhibition, and another celebration on July 19.
