A cold front hit Otago yesterday morning, dropping temperatures by 10degC in the space of a few hours, but it is predicted to be short-lived, the MetService says.

''Oamaru fell from 22degC to 12degC between 7am and 10am,'' MetService meteorologist Emma Blades said.

The region sweltered in temperatures in the high 20s on Saturday and Sunday but a southwesterly change brought showers and temperatures in the mid-teens yesterday, she said.

Dunedin went from 21degC at 2am yesterday to 10degC at 10am before climbing to 14degC. Sunday's high was 24degC.

Oamaru went from a 28degC high on Sunday to just 16.9degC yesterday, while Queenstown went from 24degC on Sunday to 14degC yesterday.

The heaviest rain yesterday was around Queenstown, with 45mm at Shotover and 27mm at Glenorchy. Dunedin recorded 22mm, Oamaru 12mm and Balclutha 20mm.

An area of high pressure was expected to bring settled weather from today.

Fine weather was forecast for most of Otago through to Friday, with temperatures in the high teens along the coast and high 20s inland.
