Rose entries tipped to be down

Recent heavy showers may be the downfall of one of the best rose-growing seasons in many years, Outram Flower Show convener Daphne Macfarlane says.

The long, dry summer had not been good for gardeners in general so entries in the show were expected to be ''down dramatically'', she said.

Added to that, the odd heavy shower in recent days would have also affected people's flowers.

''We've had 8mm in two days and a dribble this morning.''

There was a possibility some of the dahlia growers would still have a good showing, as many covered their plants, she said.

While roses had really enjoyed the summer heat, the heavy rain meant many flower heads had dropped.

''But that is what flower shows are all about. We're all in the same boat. I hope the judges have a kind eye.''

The Outram Garden Club event will also feature cut flowers and vegetables as well as a plant stall.

Local primary school children would be displaying their paintings and posies.

The show will be held at the Outram Church Hall.
