Jacobi Kohu-Morris is hoping his emotions do not get the better of him this Anzac Day when he visits Gallipoli - but just in case they do, he will have a large stash of hankerchiefs with him.

''I think it will probably be quite overwhelming.

''Those I have spoken to who have actually gone to Gallipoli have said their emotions exceeded their expectations - they didn't think they would be as affected as they were.

''So, I think it's something I'll only experience when I'm over there.''

The 17-year-old won the trip to Gallipoli, after winning the Otago Southland RSA Cyril Bassett VC speech competition in Gore at the weekend.

He will be joined by the eight other regional winners on the three-week trip in April.

But, before that, Jacobi will compete in the national final of the competition at Government House, in Wellington, on March 12-13.

If he wins the final, he will have the honour of delivering his speech at the official Anzac centenary commemorations in Gallipoli.

''Being in Gallipoli for the commemorations is a massive prize, but being able to deliver my address would be a real bonus. That would be a dream come true.''

Jacobi's Gore speech acknowledged all the returned servicemen in the room during the competition, and the 103,000 other New Zealanders whose spirit was also there.

He said it paid tribute to their sacrifice and how they helped forge New Zealand's identity based on courage, leadership and resilience.

Despite reading many books and watching many documentaries about Gallipoli, Jacobi believed walking around the site and seeing the scene would be an experience like no other.

''Hopefully, I won't need them [handkerchiefs], but it always pays to be prepared.

''I feel so honoured and humbled - it's such an opportunity.

''It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience to head off to Gallipoli, and given that it's the 100th year, it's pretty special all right.''
