The year 2015 - the Year of the Sheep, according to the Chinese zodiac - is one of promise and prosperity, and it got off to a noisy start in Dunedin last night.

New Year celebrations began in the Octagon, from where about 300 people followed a golden dragon and a small convoy of trucks to the Chinese Garden.

Onlookers there swelled to more than 1000, and a long queue snaked out of the garden itself as crowds waited to enter.

Outside, an ear-splitting tower of crackers exploded, before the traditional lion dance attracted a six-deep circle of spectators.

Celebrations ended after the annual fireworks display.
