The bands were booked and the crowd came to the Waitati Music Festival on Saturday.

Festival organiser Katie Peppercorn said the festival, held at Bland Park about 20km north of Dunedin, was a success. Children played and adults relaxed, she said.

''Heaps of people, all listening to amazing music, having a fantastic time.''

The festival was in its fourth year and had attracted more people than ever. More than 500 attendees were needed for event finances to break even ''It's bigger than ever . . . We'll definitely cover costs, so we're happy.''

The festival would return next year, she said.

''My crew of Waitatians are fantastically dedicated and have rallied around and supported me in this adventure. They are all as passionate as me and have all worked really hard.''

Roxy Bretton said she came to the festival because it provided something different each year but continued to be a ''safe and encouraging'' event.

Niila Robertson (8), of Waitati, said he created a bubble at the festival the size of an ape.

He enjoyed the festival because it was held in Waitati, ''otherwise known as paradise''.
