Folimatama denied parole

Parole has been denied for a Dunedin man who nearly killed his then partner after an ''appalling explosion of violence''.

On September 30, 2011, Jerome Folimatama was sentenced to six years and four months' imprisonment for the attempted murder of his partner.

Last month, the victim's mother, Brenda Whiteman, told the Otago Daily Times - before his parole hearing - ''I fear he will come after our daughter, and we won't be able to be there in time''.

Yesterday, the New Zealand Parole Board released its decision confirming Folimatama had been denied parole following his February 12 hearing.

The board noted his crime ''involved an appalling explosion of violence, intending to kill his then partner''.

The then 18-year-old picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed the mother of his infant son multiple times until the blade of the knife snapped.

She was then hit in the head with an axe, before Folimatama fled the South Rd home with the couple's 3-month-old son.

As his victim lay bleeding and unconscious on the floor, her 5-year-old son went to a neighbour to raise the alarm.

The board warned Folimatama's proposal for release was not suitable because his supporter's address was near the victim and her family.

He had completed several rehabilitation programmes but there was still more to be done for him ''to come to terms with violent, obsessional responses in his relationship with female partners''.

''There remains considerable work to be done by [Folimatama] in addressing the significant issues that make him an undue risk,'' the board noted.

The end date of his sentence is November 2.
