A kitchen tour in Mosgiel on Sunday is designed to help get Taieri College pupils to Africa.

Mastercraft Kitchens Mosgiel co-owner Robyn McFarlane said she was holding a tour of new Mastercraft kitchens to fundraise for pupils going on a World Challenge expedition to Kenya and Tanzania for a month from the end of June.

On the expedition, pupils would undertake treks and work in a school or at orphanages, she said.

More than 20 college pupils, aged between 15 and 17, would go on the expedition and would be split in two groups.

Mrs McFarlane said each pupil had to raise $9600 for the trip and the $15 per person kitchen tour would fundraise for 11 pupils, including her 17-year-old son, Bradley McFarlane.

The people on the ''self-drive'' kitchen tour would be given maps to find kitchens open between 1pm and 4pmThe seven kitchens on the tour were in new homes or were parts of renovations.

The oldest kitchen was 18 months old, she said.

The kitchens chosen included different products and layouts.

Mrs McFarlane expected most people on the tour would be those renovating or building new kitchens, seeking ideas for colour and design.

Others would just be curious.

''Some people just go in for a nosey.''
