Dog Rescue Dunedin is struggling to find collectors for its annual appeal day.

Volunteer appeal co-ordinator Jacqui King said about 130 more volunteers were needed to collect donations on April 2.

She needed people, possibly with dogs, to collect in 34 spots in Dunedin including Mosgiel and Green Island.

She had no volunteers in Mosgiel and only one in Green Island and needed many more.

If somebody wanted to volunteer in Outram or Middlemarch she would be open to the idea, she said.

Some of the money raised would go towards creating a dog sanctuary and the rest towards saving, desexing and rehoming unclaimed dogs from the Dunedin City Council pound.

''Dog Rescue is run on donations. We wouldn't be able to do it if we weren't given donations from the public.''

A volunteer would collect for up to two hours anytime between 8am and 6pm.

Stan Smith (85), of Mosgiel, adopted 9-year-old Labrador Charlie from Dog Rescue in December last year after his 15-year-old Labrador died.

He had owned Labradors for the past 68 years and Charlie was as playful as any of them.

''He is very, very good. He's in complete charge of the house and gets on the bottom of my bed every night,'' Mr Smith said.
