A motorcyclist and a pillion passenger were lucky to escape without serious injuries after crashing on the Northern Motorway, Southern District Command Centre Acting Senior Sergeant Jared Kirk said.

The male motorcyclist lost control of the machine, which slid across the centre line, clipping the rear of a northbound vehicle, just after 5pm yesterday, Acting Snr Sgt Kirk said.

The rider and female passenger were taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance and were ''extremely lucky'' to escape with only ''bumps and bruises'', he said.

''If they were a second earlier they would have likely hit the vehicle travelling in the opposite [southwards] direction.''

After the crash, traffic was down to one lane on the motorway.
