Police have criticised ''drunken idiocy'' after a group of about 200 youths tried to enter a party in Mosgiel on Saturday night and then began to ''cause general disorder'' in nearby Memorial Park.

Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said Mosgiel and Dunedin police dealt with the group of youths, aged 15 to 17, in the Oban St and Reid Ave area after a party was shut down by a parent.

It had then spilled out on to the street and into the park, where some youths began to ''yell, fight and smash bottles'', Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.

Police were ''extremely disappointed with the reckless behaviour'', which also resulted in Dunedin City Council staff being called to clean up a large quantity of broken glass and check the showground area and facilities before the Weet Bix TRYathlon yesterday.

Anyone with information about the disorder and the depositing of dangerous litter was asked to contact Mosgiel police.

The supervising adult had engaged security guards, but the party was shut down about 11pm, when the numbers got out of control, police said.

Two youths were arrested and returned to parents.
